Why Secularism Has Failed: On the harmful impact of Western misunderstandings on political and legal thinking in India

Secularism did not deliver the goods it had promised when it was implemented in non-western societies like India.
In this symposium, Prof. Prakash Shah and Prof. Jakob De Roover examined how the Western misunderstanding of Indian culture and society has harmed political and legal thinking in India. The dominant Western descriptions of India played a crucial role in the shaping of policies of secularism, legal reform, religious freedom and caste reservations.
